Developing Public Speaking Competence through the Merry Riana Learning Center

  • 13 February 2026

As future intellectuals, the ability to speak in public is an essential skill for students, especially those in junior high school. Adolescence, a period of self-discovery, should be filled with activities that are not only enjoyable but also valuable for their future. Public speaking skills must be trained from an early age, as these abilities are not innate but can be developed through consistent practice.

In collaboration with the Merry Riana Learning Center, SMP Nizamia Andalusia held an event titled "Talk for Teens: Speak Out, Stand Out" on November 17, 2025, at the Home of The Falcon Auditorium. This activity aimed to help students build self-confidence and overcome their fear of speaking in front of an audience. The Merry Riana Learning Center is a self-development institution focusing on Public Speaking, Smart Learning, Life, and Success, founded by one of Indonesia's most renowned female motivators, Merry Riana. The center uses the Experiential Learning Technologies (ELTTM) method, designed directly by its founder. The program was conducted in stages, starting with Grade 7 students, followed by Grade 8, and concluding with Grade 9.

During the Talk for Teens session, students learned the fundamentals of effective public speaking. At the beginning of the session, the trainer emphasized that participation plays a key role in shaping one's personal value. The more actively students participate in various activities, the more insights they gain, which ultimately enhances their personal development. Students appeared highly enthusiastic, especially when the trainer demonstrated the theories being taught—such as body language, which is as important as words and intonation in public speaking.

Students learned that smiling is a crucial element in public speaking, as it draws the audience’s attention and encourages them to listen. A smile conveys enthusiasm and sincerity in delivering a message. In addition to smiling, eye contact is equally important, as it reflects confidence and helps establish a connection with the audience. Furthermore, proper posture and strong energy while speaking ensure that messages are delivered clearly and effectively.

One of the students expressed that such training is highly beneficial, as it helps build confidence and develop fluency when speaking in front of others. This sentiment was echoed by Arfa, an enthusiastic Grade 8 student who participated in the session.

"Yes, I'm really happy to join this because it helps me feel more confident and speak more smoothly,"

Arfa

Through this training, students are expected to better understand and apply effective public speaking techniques. The aspects introduced during the session can be implemented in classroom activities and other school programs. Beyond improving communication skills, the training also aims to help students overcome their fear of presenting in public and to strengthen their confidence in pursuing their goals and achievements.
